ScrollPal
Your mindful companion across social media!
ScrollPal is a third-party plugin concept designed as part of a design thesis research project to empower users to engage with social media in a more mindful and emotionally aware way. Rather than asking users to quit or avoid platforms, ScrollPal offers subtle, in-the-moment support to reduce feelings of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and promote intentional online behavior.

The Struggle Behind the Scroll
ScrollPal was developed as part of a UX research-based thesis study that focused on how design can support users, particularly college students, in reducing the negative effects of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) on social media.
Rather than encouraging users to quit social media altogether, the research explored how the experience of using these platforms could be improved to support healthier emotional outcomes.
Key Insights from the Research
-
Users often feel left behind or miss out on enriching experiences, and expressed a need for real-time support during these moments.
-
Many users are unaware of the different forms FOMO can take or how it shapes their digital behavior and well-being.
-
Social media platforms typically prioritize monetization, making it challenging to implement changes that promote healthier engagement.
-
The Most Repeated Need: Mindful User Reminders: Participants expressed a desire for personal, non-intrusive reminders. They wanted gentle check-ins that encourage reflection and intentional use and help them regain control without disrupting their social media experience.
-
Nudge Theory in UX Design: Nudge Theory supports the idea of guiding behavior through subtle prompts that maintain user autonomy while encouraging mindful engagement. ScrollPal leverages this approach by embedding gentle nudges that empower users to reflect, take control of their social media experience, and make healthier choices, without forcing them to quit or switch platforms.

How ScrollPal helps:
Step 1: Getting to Know You
When users first install ScrollPal, they complete a short onboarding process that includes a few questions about how they experience FOMO. This step helps the plugin build a basic understanding of the user’s emotional relationship with social media and prepares it to offer relevant support.

Step 2: Tap When It Hits
After setup, users are asked to grant ScrollPal permission to be active while they browse different social media platforms. A small toggle or icon appears quietly on the screen as they scroll. For a short initial period, ScrollPal invites users to tap the toggle whenever they experience a moment of FOMO. This action allows the plugin to learn from real-time emotional experiences without disrupting the way users normally engage with their apps.
Even after this initial evaluation phase, the toggle remains available for users to continue sharing their FOMO moments. By tapping the toggle whenever these feelings arise, users help ScrollPal continuously learn and adapt to better support their unique social media experience.

Step 3: Personalized Support Setup
Based on the initial responses and logged FOMO moments, ScrollPal generates a set of personalized insights and suggestions. It then guides the user in choosing how they want to be supported going forward. Users can select the types of reminders or nudges they prefer, such as mindful reminders, pause suggestions, gentle emotional check-ins, or encouraging notes.

FOMO Education Library
Most people understand FOMO in a general way, such as feeling left out when others post exciting content. However, FOMO can show up in many different forms depending on the person and context. ScrollPal offers an educational space where users can learn about these different types of FOMO, helping them recognize how their emotions are connected to their online behavior.

Making FOMO Seen
To help normalize conversations around emotional wellness in the digital space, ScrollPal offers a collection of customizable templates. Users can share these across their social media platforms to express their thoughts, reflect on their journey, or raise awareness about FOMO in a personal and creative way.

How ScrollPal Supports the UX Principles
As part of a UX thesis research project, ten UX design principles were developed to help minimize FOMO in the social media experience of college students. These principles are grounded in real user experiences, emotional insights, and observed behavioral patterns.
Rather than existing as abstract theories, the principles serve as practical and user-centered guidelines for designing healthier and more mindful social media environments.
ScrollPal was shaped with these principles in mind. Many of its features align with and support the goals outlined in the framework. Click ‘Back to All Principles’ to explore the full list and see which ones are supported by the ScrollPal concept.
